Love just Packed up and Hauled ASS! Please let me know when you'll going to be in the area again. I'm sure some more Oldtimers who sang and Grinded with some fine women when you sang your songs would Love to see you Live. Again I enjoyed the Show, The Persuaders, and There's Is Peace, In the Valley Of Love. Keep on Keeping on. Brother Stonie Hertzog JR.. |

Hey guys. Just thought I'd come by and represent from the Maurice Watts Fan Club. I have my autographed cd, that I bought at Voice Distributions, and I just love it. Thank you for taking the time to autograph the cd for me. My two favorite cuts are "A Woman....Loved" and "A House is not a Home". It does my heart good to see that you are still together, still making great music, and sounding as good as ever. Thank you for "keeping great music alive". I hope to see you again at the 24th anniversary celebration for Maurice Watts! |

Congratulations Fellas on an excellent CD!!! Here's the review that I posted on the Soulful Detroit website & am posting on my website... I finally had the opportunity to sit down with The Persuaders new CD, "Made To Be Loved". I've seen them turn out every show that I've seen them at, but, now was the real test. It's one thing to see the fellas sing a few songs, it's quite another to hear them sing a whole CD. So often, we hear CDs that suffer from weak production, insipid lyrics, or an attempt to cater to the kiddie corps. I'm happy to be able to say that The Persuaders didn't take the easy way out, or cop out & try to be something that they're not. I listened to their "Made To Be Loved" CD & was TOTALLY IMPRESSED by its excellence. The lyrics, the production values, the entire package is on the money. This is a strong effort by the fellas & I'm proud to see that they have delivered a strong CD. What I heard was voices...PURE VOICES & all of these brothers can sing & sing WELL. There's none of that "Shake Your Booty" crap & no pandering to the lowest element. The Persuaders sing about love & the value of love. But don't get it twisted, they can also let you know that they're not going to be cheated by love. Like David Ruffin, they'll walk away from love if love won't do them right. Here's my overview of the songs on this CD... 1. A Woman Was Made To Be Loved - This ode to women sports a similar feel to "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good". Tony "Mr. Showtime" Riley brings a strong Gospel feel to the lead vocal & Alex, Richard & Tony add some sweet harmonizing to the mix. This is an excellent song & a great lead single for The Persuaders. 2.Never Stop Loving You - David Turner turns in an excellent performance in this love song to the ladies & sports 70s Temptations-styled harmonizing by Alex, Richard & Tony. This is a mid-tempo slice of sweetness for the ladies (and fellas) to enjoy. 3. Don't Think I Won't Leave You - Tony lets his lady know in no uncertain terms, that although she's got it going on & he loves her, he will indeed step off, is she doesn't get her act together. The brother's got one hell of a voice & puts it to excellent use here. 4. What About You - Now, this is one of my favorites & should be a single, purely on the strength of the sweet harmonizing. David turns in a sweet performance on lead & when the fellas hit that sweet harmony, you just can't lose. 5. All Up In Your love - So many of us have identified the sound of The Persuaders with the voice of the late, great Douglas "Smokey" Scott (R.I.P.), that many of us forget that Mr. Richard Poindexter indeed sings lead. Richard turns in an excellent performance here on lead & midway through, is joined by Tony, in this slice of mellow funk. 6. Mama - David brings tears to my eyes, with this tribute to mama, who has passed on. Those the song is about missing Mama, the song is a joyous tribute to Mama. This song will bring to mind the wise words of mothers to all of us & reminds us that although we sometimes take Mama for granted, that we'd better appreciate her while we still have her. Man, this song really hits home, as I nearly lost mine twice. Damn fellas, I wasn't ready for this one. Thanks for the reminder! 7. As One - Richard again turns in a nice, soulful lead on this cut. This is a nice, smooth mellow cut. 8. The Wedding Song - The fellas give us a sweet song to march down the aisle to. David sings this in a sweet tenor & the harmonies are gorgeous. Maurice "The Voice" Watts lends his voice in helping the couple seal their vows of matrimony. This is definitely old-school harmonizing at its best. 9. You're The Best Thing - Tony weighs in once more with some strong vocal chops, going from a smooth baritone to breaking it all down in the tradition of Marvin Junior. Near the end of this re-make of "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", he reminds me of L.J. Reynolds breaking it down on "The Dramatics smash, "I Can't Get Over You". This man has a serious voice & that's the truth! 10. This Time Next Year - To my ear, this song reminds me of "Step In The Name Of Love". This definitely sounds like a song made for Chi-Towns' steppers. David again turns in an excellent performance & for me to say that The Persuaders have great harmonies is redundant. That is a given. This is definitely one for the steppers & anyone else who likes their funk just a little funky. 11. She's Mine - Alexander Brown steps front & center & brings an excellent falsetto along with him. Another mellow ode to the ladies & is a fine effort from the fellas. As for the harmonies...do I really have to say it? 12. I Don't Think So - Tony's kind of fed up & just ain't gonna take it anymore. On this one, Tony conjures up aural visions of Teddy P & a rougher voiced version of David Ruffin. Listen to this song & tell me what you think. 13. A House Is Not A Home - Richard steps to the mike & sings this re-make in a vibrato that is controlled & used to excellent effect. Richard & the fellas bring a different feel to this classic & Richard even gives us a little touch of falsetto, to boot. They manage to take a well-known & excellent classic & bring new life to it with their approach. This is an excellent performance by Richard & The Persuaders. 14. Hypnotized - Richard again takes lead & gives us his version of his self-penned classic. The fellas pep up the beat just a taste & it's great to hear Richard's take on this Linda Jones classic. Once again, Richard sings with a controlled vibrato & even reaches for that note that Linda hit at the fade & he pulls it off quite nicely. Linda Jones will always have the definitive version, but Richard & The Persuaders have done an superb job with this one. 15. All The People - This song is sung by the entire group & features the voice of ORIGINAL Persuader, Willie B. Holland & it's great to hear his voice again. This voice is reminiscent of the socially-conscious songs that The Temptations & The Chi-Lites gave us back when we were still paying attention to such important issues. This is a cry for us to wake us, open our eyes & take care of business. The fellas are reminding us that it's time to wake up & that we ALL have to work to make a change. In short, this will prove to be one of the best releases of the year. This is no oldies act, nor a weak attempt at imitating Soul music. This CD is indeed the real deal & The Persuaders have dealt themselves, as well as us, a WINNING HAND!!! If you love REAL SOUL MUSIC, this CD belongs in your CD player, iPod, discman. Man, just go out & buy it, because this CD belongs in every Soul Music lovers collection! Whoever said that Soul Music is dead lies. Soul Music is alive & well & lives in The Persuaders. Juice - juicefreewithsoul.com Fellas, congratulations on an excellent CD release. I'm proud of you & glad to know that there's still quality music like this being made!!! Brooklyn, N.Y. Hi fellas, I have just discovered this site and what a find! I have followed you and your music since the early days and I have to say you still sound great. Some terrific songs there! A request:How does an old UK soul fan obtain a signed photo of you guys?Could somebody e-mail me with details, cost, address, etc if this is possible. Y'know we UK soulies really are starved of any soul content nowdays and a photo would really be appreciated to add to the collection. Now and again we get an artist come over to perform but nowdays it's too few and far between.Such a shame.Anyway, all the very best wishes from over here and God bless you all, I look forward to your reply...Soulfully, Ray brentwood, essex u.k. - Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 06:18:38 (EST) |
